Honolulu Complete Streets Implementation Study

Complete Streets is an emerging national movement dedicated to increasing transportation choices, reducing dependence on private automobiles, and restoring life to urban streets. Traffic congestion plagues Honolulu, so participation in the Complete Streets movement became a natural objective for the city.

More / Less

SSFM led a team of local and national experts and community representatives in the preparation of Honolulu’s Complete Streets Implementation Study. That study, and the award-winning Complete Streets Design Manual which came out of it, were developed using a collaborative process that engaged engineers and planners from 12 city agencies, AARP, the Hawaii Bicycling League, and several neighborhood boards.

The study is already bearing fruit: The two-way King Street Cycle Track, for example, was opened in 2015 and over a dozen Complete Streets demonstration projects are currently being planned. Honolulu is beginning to realize its vision of creating streets where communities thrive and motorized vehicles, buses, bikers, and pedestrians all function together in an effective and cohesive way.
