Appointment to the Planning Commission

 

Melissa May, SSFM Senior Planner, Associate and the firm’s Resilience Practice Leader has been confirmed as a Planning Commissioner for the City and County of Honolulu.  Melissa will join fellow Commissioners in advising the Mayor and City Council for the City and County of Honolulu on planning matters. The Commission holds public hearings and makes recommendations on proposals to adopt or amend the general plan, development plans, and zoning ordinances. “Melissa’s experience and expertise in community-based planning and issues of resilience and sustainability will be an invaluable addition to the Commission,” explains Mike Matsumoto, SSFM’s President and CEO.

Melissa’s brings to the commission her passion for creating better places and people through community engagement. During the pandemic, Melissa helped pioneer effective techniques for enabling citizen, government and technical stakeholders to continue their work in the face of covid. She spearheads SSFM’s Climate Resilience Strategy, a model for planning practice in the face of climate change. Melissa is looking forward to bringing her career of practical real world experience to the Commission’s work.
