Craft Fairs at SSFM

While working remotely, Wendy McLain, Senior Project Engineer, embraced an activity that addressed the challenges of the pandemic. She took to hand crafting colorful designer facemasks which she offered on-line. Wendy donated all of the proceeds to Hawaii’s Mother’s Milk Inc., the breastfeeding resource center that provides professional education and lactation counseling so that mothers may provide their own breastmilk.

As people returned to the office just prior to Christmas 2021, Wendy shared her story. A number of our staff had also been cultivating their creativity with a variety of hand crafting pursuits. The resulting show and tell led to an impromptu SSFM Craft Fair in the firm’s lunch room.

Products ranged from Wendy’s masks to designer jewelry, clothing, kitchenware, celebration ephemera and even custom concrete stepping stones and garden décor. The Fair proved to be quite successful as people took advantage of the opportunity to load up on last minute holiday gifts.

“Plans for future Craft Fairs are in the works and we may even open them to public,” says Molly Mahoney, Civil Engineer. “The fair was just one more example of the amazingly supportive SSFM culture. I guess you could call us a craft ohana,” she adds.

Darilyn Lum created Watermelon-Grow-Kits with seeds from SSFM’s food box program. Her resourceful product allows us to keep enjoying the ‘fruits’ of the food box program in a fun new way!
