Melissa May Inducted in LAI

 

Melissa May, AICP, Senior Planner and Resilience Practice Leader at SSFM International was recently inducted as a member of Lambda Alpha International (LAI), the Land Economics Society. LAI is a global land economics society providing a forum for the exchange of ideas between top professionals practicing in the world of land use and development. Membership in LAI is honorary and selective with members drawn from a wide variety of fields related to the use and reuse of land.

Melissa’s career has been dedicated to designing and facilitating inclusive planning processes encompassing transportation, long-range community outlook, infrastructure, resilience, and land use for county and state agencies, to produce award-winning projects for resilient, healthy, and sustainable communities.

She led the planning efforts for the County of Kauai General Plan which won the American Planning Association’s Daniel Burnham Award, the most prestigious honor the organization bestows for excellence in comprehensive planning. Melissa has also guided the County of Hawaii Island-wide Complete Streets Program and Downtown Hilo Multimodal Master Plan, which also won an APA Transportation Award. Among her current and past SSFM projects are the State Office of Planning Managed Retreat Feasibility study; C&C of Honolulu Climate Adaptation Design Principles; C&C of Honolulu North Shore Sustainable Communities Plan update; the State Department of Hawaiian Home Lands General Plan update; and community outreach on multiple complete streets projects for the C&C of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services.

Melissa is a subject matter expert in community engagement, branding, and complete streets and is active in the maker economy/community, having founded the Hawaii Fashion Incubator.
