Guam Island-wide Bridge Inspection Services

SSFM recently assembled a 14-member team, drawn from the firm’s professionals in Guam and Hawaii, to implement an extensive inspection program of 57 bridges. Our three teams of structural and civil engineers, all versed in Federal Highway Administration requirements and standards, completed the inspections in under two weeks. The accelerated schedule allowed assembly of the most qualified team in the most cost-effective manner.

Even in the face of tropical storm conditions, the team completed exacting inspections of every bridge under the accelerated schedule. Field logistics and support entailed the use of SSFM’s specially designed bridge inspection boat and a customized mobile van outfitted with technology, internet connectivity and sophisticated office equipment.

The bridge inspection program is overseen by Guam’s Department of Public Works to ensure the safety of Guam’s residents. All bridges are examined at least every two years in compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards and include structural & underwater inspections, scour & hydraulic analysis, and load rating services.

SSFM’s Project Manager Jerome Chaz, P.E., PMP, explained, “Having experts from within SSFM who are versed in the Federal Highway Administration bridge safety inspection program requirements and know of the local field conditions made it possible to complete the inspection program in what is surely record time”.

Collaboration with Island leaders and the Guam Department of Public Works before and during the inspections kept village mayors informed, facilitated access to the bridges and avoided inconvenience to the public.

SSFM International is a professional consulting firm providing planning, project management, construction management, civil, structural and traffic engineering. We’ve been designing and inspecting bridges in the Pacific region since the company’s founding in 1959.
