Maui Memorial Medical Center (MMMC)

Phase 1 Expansion

Maui Memorial Medical Center entailed 73,600 sq. ft. of new construction for a 4-story building to house an additional 42 beds, as well as renovation of portions of the 24,000 sq. ft. existing facility. The new facilities include space for admitting, reception, waiting area; physical and occupational therapy; an ambulatory services center; a 16 bed intensive care unit and 26 bed medical nursing unit; and 150 on-grade parking stalls.

Project Management services for the medical center consisted of monitoring the WATG/NBBJ A/E team’s preparation of the program analysis, concept design and estimates of probable construction costs for short-term and long-term master planning. SSFM also reviewed A/E deliverables, project scheduling and payment requests. An amendment to the scope involved preparing an RFQ/RFP for the selection of an A/E team to implement the $38 million first phase and advice on the design-assist-build process.

Phase 1 expansion includes developing phasing plans and risk assessments and ongoing coordination and dialogue with stakeholders. Maintaining use of the facilities and consideration of operational impacts for this 24/7 facility were crucial throughout construction.
