SSFM Goes for a ride

The Strategic Services Group took time to celebrate National Bike Month in May. The entire group jumped on Biki bike shares and rode downtown for lunch.

Mike Packard played tour guide, pointing out improvements where SSFM has been involved, and describing some of the challenges that we faced. Established by the League of American Bicyclists in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling, and encourage more folks to give biking a try.

SSFM’s longtime engagement in fostering bike usage and safety includes a 2017 contract with the Department of Transportation to consider Complete Street treatments in the rehabilitation of streets in Downtown Honolulu. The City is finally ready to repave these streets and will include many of our concepts and plans for Complete Streets in these roadways.

Mike explained that some of the 2017 concepts ultimately proved too controversial for implementation, such as a two-way protected bike lane along Bishop Street and road diet with bike lanes along Queen Street. The outing proved especially useful in appreciating the firm’s contributions to Honolulu’s infrastructure.
