SSFM on Guam

SSFM is a multidisciplinary consulting engineering practice founded in Hawaii in 1959. Over six decades, the firm has continually expanded its capabilities to best respond to the needs of the Islands, for both the built and natural environments. With this heritage, it was a natural extension when invited to participate in projects on the Mariana Islands almost 30 years ago.

In 2005 we opened our Guam office. Our experience with military facilities in Hawaii led to similar opportunities on Guam. Military bases on Guam cover approximately 39,000 acres or 29% of the island’s total land area of 210 square miles and include the strategic Andersen Air Force Base and Navy Base Guam.

A significant volume of SSFM projects entail Department of Defense and other U.S. government work. The Guam office in engaged in a variety of assignments for public clients including The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands , Government of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Guam Department of Public Works and Guam Waterworks Authority, the University of Guam and the Guam International Airport Authority.

“The success of our presence on Guam is a direct result of the seamless synergy with our resources in Hawaii,” explains Joe Duenas, SSFM’s Pacific Region Manager. “Similar to each of our island offices on Hawaii, we are a local office staffed with employees who have strong relationships, personal spheres of influence, and are vested in the community. With access to the vast pool of capabilities throughout the firm, we are a powerful, yet nimble resource for Guam clients and projects.”

Far flung island locations including Okinawa and the Philippines, have evolved the firm’s very sophisticated IT and communications capabilities. Extensive video conferencing allows hands on interface with Hawaii. This is a normal protocol during the current COVID-19 pandemic and has given us a competitive advantage during these times of social distancing. Immediately accessible video conferencing technology from our desk phones, in our conference rooms, and on our desktops contributes to a huge difference in building rapport and collaborating among team members and clients. SSFM has removed the communications and psychological barriers of distance.

“The amount of construction on the Island means we are quite busy, especially with construction management services,” says Mr. Duenas. Some of the firm’s current projects include the University of Guam Repository, the Guam Waterworks Authority Umatac-Merizo and Baza Gardens Wastewater treatment plants, the Guam Museum and the Guam International Airport Authority Concourse Isolation.

Over six decades, the firm has continually expanded its capabilities to best respond to the needs of the Islands. Our Pacific heritage extends to Guam and the Mariana Islands since our first project in the 1960’s.

SSFM opened a physical office in Saipan almost 30 years ago and relocated to Guam in 2005. With the growth of our federal and local portfolio in the Pacific, the move allowed us to serve our clients in the Pacific more effectively.

A significant volume of SSFM projects entail Department of Defense and Government of Guam infrastructure projects. The Guam office has been actively engaged in a variety of assignments for public clients to include the Guam Department of Public Works, Guam Waterworks Authority, the University of Guam, the Guam International Airport Authority, and the governments of the CNMI and the Federated States of Micronesia.
