The Best and Worst U.S. Places to Live Car-Free

How do you measure the best and the worst cities to live car free? CITYLAB ranks factors including households without access to their own cars and the share of commuters who use public transit, bike or walk to work. Honolulu is considered a medium size metro (pop. between 500,000 and 1 million). Within this category, Honolulu ties for first place with Madison Wisconsin, competing with predominantly bike friendly college and university towns. It also ranks 8th among cities of all sizes. SSFM applauds Honolulu for its efforts in encouraging reduced auto use while we look forward to continuing to assist the City’s Complete Streets initiatives to create even more friendly transit corridors.
